Shakespeare and Elizabethan England in Special Collections: Folios

Facsimiles

The book that sealed Shakespeare's reputation as a literary giant. Eighteen of its 36 plays had never before been printed. Special Collections houses a facsimile edition.

Second Folio

There were 1000 copies of the Second Folio printed. A syndicate of five publishers invested in the project. As a result, there are five different imprints, depending on which publisher sold the copy. How many copies each publisher sold depended on how many plays they owned the rights to. Scholars have identified nine variant states of the second folio. Our copy was sold by Robert Allot and is the first issue in its second state.
