The quartos were editions of Shakespeare's plays that were cheaply printed in a small format. Eighteen of Shakespeare's plays were published in quarto format before his death in 1618. They are especially valued because they appeared within his lifetime. Some are thought to originate from actors' memories or even from Shakespeare's papers. Three more quartos were published before 1642.
