Medical Grants: Nursing Grants

AACN enthusiastically supports members of our community who seek evidence to support our bedside colleagues in ensuring safety and excellent care for critically ill patients and their families. Funds support research that drives change in high acuity and critical care nursing practice. Awards range from $10,000 to $50,000.

Research Scholar Grants support investigator-initiated projects across the cancer research continuum. Awards are for up to four years and for up to $165,000 per year (direct costs), plus 20% allowable indirect costs. Independent investigators in the first six years of an independent research career or faculty appointment are eligible to apply.

The American Nurses Foundation Nursing Research Grants Program was founded almost 60 years ago to encourage the research career development of nurses. This program continues to grow with contributions for nursing research, from organizations and individuals. These donations support scientific research for advancing the practice of nursing, promoting health and preventing disease.

The American Psychiatric Nursing Foundation (APNF) is pleased to continue the research grants program to enhance scientific contributions advancing the knowledge and practice of psychiatric-mental health nursing.

HRSA makes grants to organizations to improve and expand health care services for underserved people

The purpose of the National Hemophilia Foundation Nursing Fellowship is to provide support for a registered nurse currently employed or interested in hemophilia care to conduct nursing research or clinical projects. Endorsement by a federally funded hemophilia treatment center is recommended. Only registered nurses from an accredited nursing school enrolled in a graduate nursing program or practicing hemophilia nursing care may apply.

The ONS Foundation advances oncology nursing science, providing research grants and career development awards.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funds a wide array of research and initiatives to help address some of America’s most pressing health challenges.

STTI and collaborating nursing organizations present the following research grant opportunities to nurses around the globe.

Six percent of all funded grants from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), formerly the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR), were awarded to nurse principal investigators (PIs) in FY 1994, 9 percent in FY 1995, 4 percent in FY 1996, and 2 percent in FY 1997. For corresponding years, nurse PIs represented 7 percent, 7 percent, 4 percent, and 5 percent of the total pool of AHRQ research grant applicants. Thus, nurse PIs have been successful in receiving funding when they applied for Agency grants, and they should build on this success by submitting more grant applications.

The mission of the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) is to promote and improve the health of individuals, families, and communities. To achieve this mission, NINR supports and conducts clinical and basic research and research training on health and illness, research that spans and integrates the behavioral and biological sciences, and that develops the scientific basis for clinical practice.
