Theatre: Resources for Monologues and Scripts

This guide will help you with research and projects for theatre.

Get Thee to a Monologue-Locating Monologue Items in the Stacks

Monologues are located on the Basement level.  Monologues, and other pieces, from different plays are often grouped together in anthologies for a specific gender, type of scene performance, or time limit.  For example, you may find monologues for women, men, two people, that last two minutes, 60 seconds, or that take place in a hospital!

Most monologues can be found in the Basement in the following Call No. range: PN 2080.  If you want to search for monologues in the catalog, do a "subject words" search for "monologues".  We also have several indexes of monologues:

Guide to monologues, men : an index of over 800 monologues from classical and modern plays

Guide to monologues, women : an index of over 800 monologues from classical and modern plays

The Smith and Kraus monologue index

Looking for Plays

Another way to find monologues is to look for plays.  Since our plays are not in one area, the best way to look up plays is by going to the library catalog, typing in playscript and doing a "genre heading" search. Note: This will only get you playscripts. It will not get you anthologies or other materials with plays included.

Another way to find monologues is to look up a specific play or playwright.
