Search Medical Databases Using Wild Cards ($), Truncation (*) & Phrase Searching (): Phrase Searching

There are various ways to search a databases and for most databases, what you put into it will be what you pull back. It is very important to use resources that will expand your search & make it more exact.

Phrase Searching

The ability to find words together, somewhere in a document

  • Two or more words may be a phrase that is commonly used and indexed as such. Ex: gene therapy
  • You may want to enclose the phrase in double or single (Embase) quotes. Ex: “gene therapy”
  • Sometimes phrase searching can be too specific when your search needs to be more sensitive. Consider that you might be losing valuable results if you enclose your phrase with quotes.
  • Also, some platforms/databases automatically create the quotations when you search on a single line. For Ex: Ebsco Host Databases
