ORCID: Home

This guide is an overview of ORCID for TCU faculty, staff, and students

What is ORCID?

An ORCID ID is a unique identifier for each researcher or author.

  • Many journals and grant funders require you to have an ORCID ID. The library recommends that all persons publishing research obtain and use an ORCID ID (it's free).
  • ORCID stands for Open Researcher and Contributor ID. Learn more about ORCID and sign up at the ORCID website.
  • Questions about ORCID or want help getting started? Email us!
  • TCU is proud to be an ORCID institutional member.

ORCID wordmark with the words "Connecting Research and Researchers" underneath and the words "Member Organization" on the right.

Why use ORCID?

ORCID is a unique numerical identifier. This distinguishes each researcher from any other one, which is important to disambiguate persons with similar names.

  • ORCID stays with you, even if you change names or institutions.
  • Many journals and granting agencies now require the use of an ORCID ID. These organizations use them in their regular workflows including manuscript submission and throughout the grant proposal process.
  • There are other systems out there for assigning a unique number, including Scopus Author ID and the ResearcherID from Web of Science. But ORCID is the most widely-adopted and universal tool. Most identification systems can be linked together.

How do I get an ORCID ID?

To get an ORCID ID, please visit https://orcid.org/register.

  • It is recommended that you use your TCU email address when you register.
  • ORCID is designed to have a single ORCID ID per person. If you think you may have created one previously but do not remember it and/or your login information, then please use the Reset Password page.
  • The ORCID website supports TCU single sign-on (SSO). It is possible to link your ORCID ID with TCU on that page.

Ways to use ORCID today

Get started using your ORCID ID:

  • Always use it when submitting an article manuscript or grant proposals.
  • Build a profile on ORCID website with your past publications. Example of an ORCID profile: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1825-0097
  • Include your ORCID ID in your email signature, or on your personal webpage or social media accounts.
  • List it on other scholarly output such as conference posters or other works.
  • Link your ORCID ID with other research profiles.

Link your ORCID account with other sites

You can link your ORCID ID with other systems. These systems will help automatically import references into your ORCID profile and can also work the other direction.

  • ResearcherID / Web of Science Profile: Instructions to Link
  • Scopus Author ID: Go to your profile on ORCID and under Works, click Add and then "Search and Link." Click on Scopus.
  • NCBI: Log in to NCBI or PubMed. Click "Account Settings." Then "Add account" under "Linked Accounts."
