Introduction

William Shakespeare, born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, is widely regarded as one of the greatest writers in the English language. His works, which include 39 plays, 154 sonnets, and several poems, have left an indelible mark on literature and theatre. Shakespeare's plays, spanning comedies, tragedies, and histories, explore timeless themes of love, power, betrayal, and the human condition. The Special Collections department houses many Shakespeare resources, including quartos, folios, and his poetry from the Elizabethan era. Shakespeare's legacy endures, with his works continuing to be studied, performed, and celebrated worldwide. He died in 1616 at age 52.
